Solo

Traveling solo especially abroad, has allowed me to relax.  It feels like I’m on retreat without the structure.  Gives me the chance to reflect & be with my thoughts & not have to worry about the immediate needs of others, a concept extremely foreign to me.  Granted it’s been one day, but it’s been a glorious day & I’m ready to start day 2.  Modern technology allows me to keep in contact with my best girl.  She & I have been close, but since her graduation, actually since completion of her 1st year of college there’s been a shift.  I’m still her Mom, but she’s doing all these things on her own & it makes my heart swell.  It’s like I’m watching the fruits of my labor just blossom,

So far this trip has truly shown me being on my own is not only “not a bad thing” but it can be a good thing.  Don’t get me wrong I would have loved to travel & share all this with R, but alas that whole death did us part got in the way. I’m at a point in my journey where I see couples enjoying each other & it doesn’t hurt as bad as it did before the wave doesn’t drown me, it’s a mild lilt of water over my feet & hugs my ankles. The desire to be a wife again is no longer there.  Don’t get me wrong I still desire companionship & relationship with a deep connection to share things, to laugh, to solve all the worlds problems one minute & the next moment come up with a silly song.

My ocean

What I've learned about my grief and maybe I use this analogy because I grew up on the west coast and the beach was a place I found joy and peace and excitement.  The ocean is magnificent and powerful and not predictable, at least not predictable to me.  I describe my grief as the ocean.  I always start on the shore.  There can be horrible storms and the storms pull me out to the sea.  In the early days I wanted to be pulled out never to be returned to the shore.  I'm trapped in the waves just barely surviving and just barely able to do a dog paddle to keep my head above the crashing waves.  There can be storms not so horrible, I'm still pulled out to sea and I can catch my breath a little easier in between waves.  At the end of the storm I'm always brought back to the shore.  There are times the waves just come in and reach my knees or just my ankles and sometimes the waves are so small they tickle my fee and I laugh and giggle.  There are other days I ride the waves and enjoy them like surfers, the waves bring me on a fun trip and it's thrilling.

Early in my journey before I met you I was pulled out to sea for days, weeks at a time, it was the horrible storms where I was drowning.  I did not want to  come back to shore I wanted to perish and never return.  What kept me dog paddling and gasping for air was C.  She was on the shore and she was also caught in the horrid waves at times.  I needed to be her buoy.  When she was drowning I would do my best to bring her up to the surface and as a drowning person will do with an untrained swimmer I got pushed down into the wave trying to keep both our heads above water.

When I met you I was still caught in storms, sometimes it was the horrid ugly storms other times it wasn't so bad I was just drifting out there waiting to get back to shore.  Eventually I got use to the tides and learned to navigate them better.  There are more days now that my toes are tickled and I'm giggling or I'm out riding the waves like the best surfer ever.  There are still storms out there that pull me out to sea, but they don't last as long and they are very rare.  Sometimes I'll be standing on the shore, my feet in the sand and this huge wave crashes over me, but I'm not dragged out to sea, I'm not struggling.  I'm just drenched and the wave is gone as quick as it came.  This ocean will always be in my life.  I would like it if you were on the shore giggling when the waves tickle, waiting for me on the sand when I get pulled out to sea or having a towel ready for me when I'm drenched with an unexpected wave on the sand and being my biggest cheerleader as I ride the wave in style back to shore.  I hope that makes sense.

Library book

Fate, really I don't know about that, I'm not a subscriber.  Though I didn't toss it, I was real close to tossing it, but I didn't.  Am I crazy for even entertaining the idea.   It's been a little over 3 years.  Timing is so weird.

I wasn't heart broken, just wasn't a good fit for me, I don't know I'm pretty tired, drained.  Lots of energy expended today.  It's so easy.  I'm all over the place and so non-coherent.  There wasn't even time, though not sure what that would look like.  I still remember the parking lot promise, I think you  may have forgotten.  Different phase of my  life.  No longer daughter.  I'll always and forever be Mom, but a different capacity.  I have more confidence, I think.  Life is good, I think I'll just go with that for now.

Dear Mom

 Dear Mom

What's it like these last 15 almost 16 years?  Gram was there to greet you, what does she look like now?   What about you?  How are things going with Dad?  Is it weird to see him after all this time.  Is time even a thing there?  I miss the fact that we can't laugh and joke about things, especially now.  There are so many moments I have with my daughter that I know you experienced or at least I think you did.  I remember you telling me I was so funny and I have those same thoughts with my daughter now.  I realize now, like at this very moment that you were a person too.  I know that sounds so dumb, but I had that realization when I wrote the second eulogy for Dad's funeral.  You had dreams, fears, excitement, disappointment, grief.  Thank you for being my Mom.  I know you loved me because now I'm a mother, I'm your daughter and saw how you loved me and learned from both you and Gram.  I wonder what you would think of your granddaughters.  Yes plural, one with your namesake.  I know what it's like to have your daughter go off to school now like you did so long ago.  Mine is so much younger than I was when I left home.  Mine is also so much closer to home than yours nearly 28 years ago now.  I was home longer with you, mine has spread her wings at a younger age.  Circumstances are different, but the launching is the same.  I know you felt alone after both of your kids left the same summer.  In your home there were two others to share meals, share words, and share space.  It was not a silent home, much quieter I'm sure.

What are your thoughts?  I guess I'm still looking for your approval, wondering if I'm doing ok in your eyes.  How's R?  Did you greet him, you finally met his Mom I guess.  How'd that go?  I can't even imagine you and L in the same room together.  What about AS?  I know you met here, during times of celebration.  I don't know what else to say Mom, you've been gone so long, I still miss you, miss that cackle of yours and getting us both going and Gram would joke about how many eggs we would lay.  I have those type of inside jokes with C, memories I hope she will think back on with fondness some day.

I know I do things differently than you did, I know you loved me the best you could and I hope you know I love you and still think about you all the time.

take care,

Kites on the Ice

I'm sitting here in the coffee room, great name by the way, drinking a hot white chocolate something and looking out onto a frozen lake in Buffalo Minnesota.  There are lots and lots of cars out there, daring mother nature, well at least in my mind that is not familiar with the practice of driving on frozen lakes.  Pictures of the nasty sister falling through the ice from "Little Women" come to my mind.  The room is quiet and dark, just the natural light coming in from the window overlooking the lake.  Ice houses, families, dogs all having a wonderful time.  There was a kite festival earlier today so cool to see this community enjoying their Saturday February 14th, Valentine's day.  I have found more books of poetry to peruse and use as a spring board to contemplate and reflect.  I need to do this more often.

I truly wonder what you would be like now my love.  I'm sure you would still be the avid reader, what discussions would we have these days.  I think I would be a different person at this moment, I may not even be at this retreat and learning to be a befriender if you were still on this earth.  I like the way my life is right now, it's not better than before it's just what my life is these days.  I remember you saying home is where ever I was.  I learned from a woman today who's husband passed away, all though I think she may have been divorced when he passed, I'm not sure.  Not all marriages are good and fulfilling.  I know I sound so Pollyanna, but you were all I ever knew.  You asked me to grow old with you every day, and now I am here growing old without you.  I'm not in the same place I was years ago when I made my silent retreat here, I've grown even since then.  I'm proud of who I am and what I'm doing, I don't want to blow my own horn, but I'm being honest, not boastful.

I love you handsome man so very much, I often think what our lives would be like.  Would our daughter be on the same path as she is now? Would she be at the same school? Would she choose the same course of study? So many questions, questions that really don't matter, the answers are pointless, but fun to think about sometimes.  I do miss your daily humor in my life.  I miss the jovial, the "dad" jokes, the puns.  I guess I really miss my own Dad for the same reasons.  I must sign off for now my love.

take care,

The Starry Night 1889

What laughter booms across the night sky

from the bellies of heavenly beings? Few hear it,

but sometimes the breath of heaven curls like a bard's beard

and what has only twinkled begins to beat and throb.

Behind it all a drumbeat calls over the mountains.

The villagers think it's thunder, those who are not asleep.

Only a few remain awake to see the starry, starry night

and witness what they can barely imagine how to tell.

Some nights the roar breaks the silence.  One was there

when it happened, and saw, and tried to tell the secret,

and died young.  How much of life he gave for this

we cannot know.  We know only that something precious

as nard was poured out at the foot of these hills,

the blue, the yellow bought with solitary tears.

From The Color of Light Poems on Van Gogh's Late Paintings

Marilyn Chandler McEntyre

Not sure why this poem stuck out to me, but it did.  Maybe something about the laughter from bellies of heavenly beings.  I will leave this here.

In this place again, sadly the last time.

Your princess has started college and my life is in a transition.  I'm no longer sandwiched between my Dad and kiddo.  I've come to call her that these days.  Not sure what you would be calling her, what nick names you would have for her now.  You would be 52 years old and my old jokes have just begun really.  I miss you, even still.  So I've chosen to serve people as a befriender.  I'm just learning the ropes.

I've gone to a isolated part of the retreat center, the part that actually has wifi allowing me time to myself and time to blog and reflect.  Here's what I have so far from yesterday: it's a cut and paste job, but you get the gist.

Well that function will not work.  Something involving paying for something, always seems to be the way.  I got here on Friday February 13, 2026, I'm on retreat with a wonderful group of people, I am the youngest person here by the way.  I'm learning so much and really putting my listening skills to use.

One session talked about hopelessness and how that can be a gift from God, I'm thinking are you nuts?  But of course after further reflection and sitting with the idea it just might be a gift.  When we feel hopeless that is a time to turn to God.  My answer was I didn't let myself feel hopeless for very long I tried to take action to do something.  There is no time limit, and it could very well be I am a different person, dare I say better person for the pain and suffering I endured.

Another session that really stayed with me was Questions of Jesus.

Here they are:

1. What do you want me to do for you?

2. Why were you weeping?

3. What are you looking for?

4. Do you want to be made well?

5. Why are you afraid?

6. Do you love me?

7. Why are you frightened and why do doubts arise in your hearts?

8. Did I not choose you?

9. Where is your faith?

The assignment was to choose three of these questions that were most pertinent in your life right now.

There are readings from the New Testament where Jesus actually asks these questions. The three I chose were:

What do you want me to do for you?

What are you looking for?

Where is your faith?

Of course we had to whittle down those choices to one.  I settled on

What are you looking for?

As I alluded at the beginning of this post I am in a transition period in my life.  My daughter has graduated from high school and she is well on her way to defining her own life and exploring paths she can take forward.  It is so exciting to watch and I am so very proud of her.  I've been doing this solo for so long I forgot I was supposed to be an empty nester with you.  I am so use to being alone it's not as painful.  I guess I shouldn't say alone, I have companionship.  Chapter two is done and the book is closed, but I've got a long term subscription to very adventurous circular if you will. My love, I really do not think I will have that eros love again.  The topic of another session on this retreat.  I digress.

Part of the question exercise was to imagine discussing this question with Jesus or a wise person.  I imagined walking with Anne at the farm along the driveway.  I'm looking for a path, a way to live my life with my role as Mom still there, but defined a bit differently.  I'm not the rule maker or rule enforcer anymore.  My role as cheerleader, supporter is still there and maybe even there more than ever.  I'm not sure exactly what I mean.  I do know that I love my daughter with all of my heart and soul and everything that is inside me.  The really cool thing is I also really like her, like a lot.  She is such a cool person, funny, smart, passionate, balanced.  Again, I digress.  She is the center of my world and now she is not in my world has much and I need to find a path that is for me.  Something fulfilling, I chose the befriender ministry.  Away for me to serve in a different capacity.  It's a quiet way, which I know shocker since I'm such a talker, but I think I'll be good at it.  I want to be a person she is proud of, set a good example while I still can, she's doing great on her own.

We talked about Needling love vs. Giving love.  God loves me.  We say that all the time, but the leader said, no God loves me.  That is different from God loves everybody.  It's hard to acknowledge that I am loveable and deserve love.  The love of God and other people.  The leader of my group said she went on a retreat for women who lost their mother.  One exercise was to write a letter to your Mom then write what you think her response would be.  That really got me thinking.  I so wish I could share some stories with my Mom, to hear her say, see, I told you.  I can hear my Gram saying someday you'll be a mother and you'll understand.  I wonder what my Mom would thing of my life.  How I chose to raise my daughter, on my own.  Not because of a choice, not because of a bad marriage or bad relationship, but because this is the life I have, the life of a widow.  My parents' relationship was not the best and not something to model. I don't know, it's the agape that was there for me from my Mom, my Gram, and my Dad.  No matter what.  I have that same agape for my daughter and I sure hope she feels it.

My thoughts are all over the place.  I will take a break for the time being and read some poetry.  Not sure why that's my comfort, relaxing activity, but it is.

I love you handsome man, always will.

So tired

My eyelids are heavy and my heart is tired.  Thoughts swirl and my mind just goes.  I need a rest, I need laughter.  I need something funny to ease my mind.  A needed day off from work, but my mind betrays me.  I'm struggling, but do I share, do I say.  I'm trying to be helpful, but I'm just so tired and absolutely drained.  I expended a lot of energy this afternoon, I did enjoy myself, but there was a price.  I am so tired. I know I keep saying that.  I don't know what else to say.

One day at a time

I can't sleep, my mind swirls with so many thoughts. An upcoming trip, a phrase uttered at the gathering today, and the year ten.  Funny it's not the thoughts you would think that are keeping me up.  The new information I learned today was indeed new information, but not shocking or unexpected.  The new information doesn't scare me or make me want to change course.  If anything it's just the opposite, the new information is drawing me in, pulling me closer.  I care so very much I want to help through thick and thin. I know I can because I've done it before, kinda like Harry Potter when he casts the all encompassing patronus.   The possibility or dare I say likelihood of a repeat for me doesn't scare me or make me gun shy.  I still want to learn and keep going even with this knowledge.  I still want to take things one day at a time, no matter where the origin of the phrase I'm sticking with it and sticking with you. One day at a time.

I think what is keeping me up is a conversation we had tonight at the gathering.  We talked about the place where your princess works.  The people, well really family said that place had been there "forever" and I just can't fathom that.  That building was not there when you were here.  I know that in my bones.  For them to say it has been here forever, at least ten years.  It just hit me now 2:30 in the morning, it just clicked in my mind.  The people I call family, the people who are from here, roots are here, all their memories are of here, just like your princess all they know is this area.  They said it had been here forever, at least ten years.  I even spoke up and said, no it hasn't been that long, I remember that building being built.  It was built after you left this planet, you never step foot in that place.  For the words it's been there forever makes it seem like you've been gone forever.  Please understand the family was not trying to be malicious, they had no idea my brain still thinks in terms of before you, after you.  On the way home C said it was built 7 or 8 years ago. That's not forever damn it.  That's not even ten years ago, not yet damn it.  The time as become a rounding up. I guess we're up to the nearest ten.

Math.  I still remember you taking that statistics class to get your AA to transfer to SDSU.  Sitting in that coffee shop in Coronado, Cafe 1134.  We both did the homework.  You on your paper for the actual grade and me on my paper so we could compare answers.  If they weren't the same you'd look at my work and learn how I got to my answer.  That's how we did so much of life.  Learning how the other thought and we came to solutions together and understood where the other was coming from.

3,373 days. It's been 9 years and 88 days. It's kinda like I'm still 49, I'm not rounding up.  Though this would be prime teasing time.  From January until October I would get to tease you about how old you were.  Gray hair jokes, which I don't believe I am donning just yet, that really use to make you smile in a shake your head kind of way.  Remember your 88th birthday, the cake, the candles.  You said you would wait for me even if it was until you were 88. I didn't even realize you had a thing for me.  You even wanted to get married before I graduated.  You watched me work so hard, studying in the library until 2am sneaking in coffee for us.  Or maybe you just wanted me to know you were marrying me and not my degree.  Whatever the reason that day in 2001 was the absolute best.

I'm rambling and now it's 3:20 AM.

I'm keeping the promise, but I'm not pushing it.  I'm not giving up, but I'm not seeking. You know what I mean, you always did.  Being open to it, just taking it one day at a time.

Inevitable

The only thing in life that is inevitable is death.  Death is a part of life. Everything that lives will die, from the dandelion in the front yard, the animal that becomes part of the family, to the most important person in your life.  The circumstances of death are not known, the aftermath of death is a mystery.  The focus should be on life and the time we have on this planet however finite it may be.  The finality of life is a reason to strive to do good.  To do good for others and do good for ourselves.  Sharing kindness, caring, and giving love are all part of this finite world. It is important to also be open to kindness, caring and the love freely given and not be afraid of  the dates on a tombstone.  Unfortunately pain, sorrow, evil, loneliness are also components of this world, but those are finite too.  For the fixed time we have on this planet let us live, feel joy, let us love and help one another with the pain, sorrow, evil, and loneliness.

Whatever the number of decades, years, months, days or mere moments; giving love and being open to love is all that matters.

301

Living again.  Not just existing, completing tasks, checking boxes, crossing off the to do list.  Actually living. laughing, having discussions, being open.

My cheeks hurt I'm smiling so much

I'm a little nervous, the wall of protection is not there, I'm kinda trusting, I'm kinda nervous, lots of excitement too.  I think the key is not to overthink it.

Smarter now.  Chapter 3, maybe.

Nine

Nine years ago today was the last day you were alive on this planet. I still miss you.  So much has changed in these last nine years.  I think about you all the time.  I went to the grocery store today, I bought cracklin’ oat bran. It’s not as hard as it use to be & I feel guilty about that.  I know that does not make sense, but maybe there is so much on my mind right now, so many tasks I need to complete.

I miss you.

It's been a while now.

hello there, not sure who is on the other end of this anymore.  Maybe it's just for me now, I don't know.  So much has  happened since the last time I was here.  Is my confidence coming back? It's been a little over five months now.  So many tasks to complete, an entire life and existence to pack away and put in places to allow us all to move on.

So many other memories flood my mind.  9 years ago today we took a virtual flight, before "virtual" was even a thing, to Paris.  As a family we had a spring break trip right in our living room.  We even had inflight snacks, yes I'm talking little packages of trail mix from delta.  I did the best I could, I still am.  My bag of tricks for your princess has expanded and grown with her as her needs grow and mature.  I really miss you.

Sometimes I can't believe he's gone, but I can.  I know that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.  If you were still here I don't think I would be doing all of the legal and necessary work because of the thousands of miles, well I probably would because that's who I am.  It would be such a different predicament if you were still on this planet.  I don't think he would have moved here, if that happened your princess would not have been as close to him; and this wouldn't hurt so much for her, AGAIN.  Sometimes I wonder what we would be like if our lives hadn't changed 3,268 days ago.  Would she have the same interests, would she be on the same path.  I'm doing my best my love, God I miss you.

Reminder

I needed this reminder again.  Today I had no energy for anything.  I did get outside yesterday, really just to do what she wanted, it was good to be outside.  The message last night resonated with me.  The thorns have choked out the light. I'm afraid to let it go, it's become part of my definition.

It's just been a day is all.

It's been a year now.

It's been a year now.  So much has happened in these last twelve months.  I still remember the last time I saw you, at my work.  You had no idea the hell I was going through. I still feel bad I didn't call, I just couldn't.  There was so much on my plate I just couldn't add more to it.  More not fun stuff.  Not fun stuff that began within weeks of August 20.  First the unexpected most terrifying trip to the ER. Then struggling to find the care needed and get things going in the right direction.

Then a few months into that ordeal and figuring things out, the fall.  The fall that lead to the extended stay, not knowing if a return home would happen.  That's when I saw you for the last time, right in the middle of all that.  When I needed support the most, when I needed someone to say it'll be ok, it'll work out.  I did have help, just not the arms around me to support me.  It wasn't fun.

I still miss chatting though, telling stories, making jokes.  I saw your words, a definite dig at me.  I wonder if you saw mine? I still care, I think I always will.  I do truly hope there is less to complain about in this world.  I really wish we could be friends.  Maybe enough time has passed and we can or maybe not.  I don't know.

jumble

I have so much on my mind.  There is a jumble of thoughts, so many memories, flash backs.  I can't  put my thoughts into coherent sentences.  I am so tired.  I've been visiting the place again, I'm not making any of the decisions, but watching all the choices unfold, the letters and wrist bands dnr cloud my mind.  A heavy heart.  It's been 8 years, precisely 2,945 days. I'm listening to stories, asking questions to encourage those stories she wants to share.

I miss you handsome man.  There is just so much I want to get out, but don't have the energy.

"Always within never"

 An always, within never

                    Barbery

I just finished "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" it was a novel you enjoyed.  I started it many years ago and just couldn't get past the opening.  I stuck with it this time and it was just brilliant.  It had a perfect ending.  I am a very tough book critic, if you can end a book well that's top notch in my mind.  Ms. Barbery did just that, it literally brought tears to my eyes, I'm still feeling the book in my chest and taking it all in.  I so wish I could share this with you, to talk about the work of art in words, words written and then spoken.  I miss you so much. I crave someone to talk to about this kind of stuff.  Kinda like Les Misérables, but that night I did have someone to share with, that was so nice.  To connect with someone over art and life in art.

My always within never, could that be you, perhaps. May those moments come and let me be open to them.

I miss you handsome man.

Uncertainty

This really helped.  Sometimes I feel like I use "self care" as an excuse, but when I think about it really has been a very difficult start to 2023.  Honestly, since last fall it's been tough.  Unexpected trip to the ER for the unexpected member.  Trying to get all the support and care needed for your princess.  Then the first week of the year and the hospital stay that lasted four weeks.  Here we are about ready to start month 3 and things are still a bit unsettling.  There has been definite improvement, but I'm struggling to keep the balance.  I went back to work today after three weeks.  More uncertainty on that front as well.  I'm trying to remember

God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change.

The courage to change the things I can,

And the Wisdom to know the difference.

I've been thinking about him alot lately.  I realized that I have not had time to ponder that it's over.  To let it settle.  It's been six months now and I think things are as stable as they can be for the time being. Now I have time, it will crowd my mind I'm sure.   I'm so very tired.

I will stop for now.

Biscuits and Gravy

I was scared when I drove over there tonight, leaving my house after no answer on the phone, or the AI device, and no call back when you see the missed call.  I left calmly, I didn't want to scare her.  Memories of running up the stairs 21 years ago to find my Gram filled my mind as I waited at the light.

I learned today is National Caregivers Day  I didn't know that was a thing, I guess there's a day for everything.

You made someone smile today.  My Dad had a roommate these last 3 days, RS.  As I type those initials my heart flutters because they are the same as yours.  I digress... Thursday as I was there with my Dad, the roomie had some cereal sent up from food services,  he asked for sugar and the deliverer of cereal said "sorry there wasn't any on the tray and to call his nurse" he apologized and left.  My Dad was asleep, and being all too familiar with hospitals I know they have a "nourishment" room where we can fill water cups and find various snacks and condiments.  I told him I would get him some sugar and asked if he wanted one or two packets, he replied "bring me 3" I went down the hall and procured said request.  My health care provider brain went to work right away, as I walked down the hall and hoped he wasn't diabetic.  I do recall an overheard conversation, his team discussing a concern of his lack of eating, I promise I wasn't eavesdropping, my hearing is good and those curtains are thin.  In short my concern of his glucose monitoring status was allayed.  He was grateful upon my return with the 3 packets. I was able to gather more information about the RS who is still living among us, he's been in the hospital for quite some time, there is a difficulty finding him a rehab location for discharge.  The tone was that he's been in that room for weeks, and maybe months.  My heart went out to him.  I spend the day with my Dad, well the school day anyway, after I dropped off your princess (still so crazy to use that title here, sometime I wonder what you would call her now, or if she would be a different individual if you had remained with us on this planet - enough Javier Marìas) and stayed with my Dad until I needed to go and pick her up.  All those hours RS did not have any visitors.

When you resided in the hospital the last weeks of your life, I made sure you were never alone.  I so wanted to stay the nights with you, but couldn't because your Princess needed me at home.  The one time I stayed the night, (that was the day of the 8 hour procedure, you were in so much pain) and she was home with AS, I just couldn't do it again, she was so sad and scared I wasn't there, I had to do what was best for her, you knew that and wanted the same.  I made sure there was always someone there with you.  AS spending the nights with you, her career as a nurse was so very helpful at that time.  You never wanted your princess to see you in pain or in agony.  I remember one occasion when the pain was so bad it was just you and me, you asked me to read to you. Ancient literature, poetry I used my phone and the power of the internet, and the help of super K from 3,000 miles away sending me texts to read.  Catullus, Neruda, Bollaño.  When we were in our twenties, before we shared a last name, we would talk into the night, our fears, hopes, dreams, how to solve the world's problems and make jokes about our shortcomings.  I remember your fear, it was not a fear of death, you had a fear of being alone.  If that wasn't a Marìas I don't know what is.

Meanwhile back to the roomie.  Today I was there with my Dad and those dang thin curtains I could hear a request from RS to his nurse, he wanted biscuits and gravy.  He's been craving them for weeks.  She said sometimes she could bring something from the cafeteria if she was down there.  She asked if he was sure they had them today and asked if he had any money for them. She said she would try to get them when she was downstairs.  He was sure they had them, he was waiting for a friend to bring some money, but they would only be available during breakfast hours.  She apologized and said she'd do what she could.  My Dad was nodding on and off to sleep.  I asked him if he wanted anything from the cafeteria, he said no, I mentioned I could use a cup of coffee and went down stairs.  I made it to the cafeteria and found the right counter for biscuits and gravy.  The lady in front of me was also ordering biscuits and gravy, I asked if that was for the patient on the xx floor.  It was, his nurse went down to quench his craving. I smiled with my eyes, (facial expressions are trickier in these pandemic times) and said I was there for the same purpose.  I told her I would get it and bring it up.  I think we both marveled in the other's caring and kindness.

Back up the elevator, styrofoam container of biscuits & gravy in one hand and coffee in the other I walked the square hallway back to the room.  I gave RS the package with a fork and napkin and told him I brought biscuits and gravy. He was grateful and ready to dig in.  My Dad was SOUND ASLEEP, like full on dream mode, rhythmic breathing, kinda snoring asleep. After a few minutes and a "thank you" for the roomie, I pulled the chair over to the curtain where I could keep on eye on my Dad's shoulder gently moving to his sleep rhythm as he lay on his side and sit where the curtain ended and I could see RS.  I asked him where is he was from, "Louisiana" and then of course my obligatory response, what brought you here.  His story started to unfold, much like the chair I brought over to sit and visit with this man who craved non-medical human interaction almost as much as the biscuits and gravy.  He told me he is Stage IV, something part of my own story, and his family in Louisiana had all passed away, he moved up here because a friend talked him into it, she wouldn't let him die alone.  More and more pieces of my own story flooded my mind and memory, pieces I kept to myself, he needed to talk, he needed to share.  I kept the conversation going and suggested he probably had better biscuits and gravy in Louisiana.  He replied he can make better. He was pretty tired I could tell, but he wanted to visit and talk.  His eyes were closed, but his mind and lips kept going, waiting to converse.  I asked if he liked to cook. He loves it. He grew up on his own and learned how to cook, he would find a recipe and the next time he made it he would add something different.  He smiled when he told me he wasted a lot of food when he was young. His culinary skills improved as he continued to cook and experiment with recipes. He even started to give me tips, next time I entertained I should serve sherbet between courses, adding boiled eggs to greens I smiled and nodded, I didn't have the heart to tell him cooking is not my passion.  He said something, food for thought if you will, something along the lines of ... In life you gotta try new things, even if they don't really go together, you never know after you try it you might think I've been missing out. His eyes were still closed as he spoke about his youth and his kitchen endeavors. He mentioned he likes sushi.  I piped up and said I like sushi too.  I told him 'the story', you know ... "the first time my husband and I had sushi (I didn't say late husband like usual, I didn't want him to feel bad.  I usually only say late husband to avoid awkwardness later when they want to know more about him, I can't blame them he was a fascinating man & I would talk your head off all about him) anyway, "the first time my husband & I had sushi at a restaurant we were sitting there and my husband noticed the little clump of wasabi and he popped the whole thing in his mouth thinking it was an avocado" RS popped open his eyes and looked at me with a shock and a bit of a grin on his face.  "Oh weee," he cried.  You still got it my love, making people laugh and smile.  We chatted for a few more minutes about cajun food, whataburger, and waffle house.  The doctor came in, luckily it was for my Dad, allowing my friend to drift off to sleep after a non-medical conversation, hopefully he dreamt of sushi, cajun spices, and wasabi.

I could write more about how he wanted to go outside, reminding me of your trips to radiation therapy via ambulance and your absolute gratitude when the driver asked if you wanted to go the long way around the building to get some extra time in the sunshine and fresh air. I so wish there was more I could do for the roomie, we said our goodbyes today as my Dad was sent home and RS told my Dad to "do what they say" then looked at me and said "and you make sure he does"

take care my love.

today

Every day.  Today.  Not to toot my own horn, but I think I did a good job on the big birthday today. It really was two days.  I've also been there for my Dad and kept things balanced as best I could. I miss you. Every moment of happiness, achievement, every milestone achieved will always have a smattering of sadness, something missing.  I miss you so much. I miss being loved by you, that feeling of knowing I was loved no matter what.

I looked for it again, but I was mistaken.  So much has happened in these last six months.

You couldn't be bothered to be here when I got back. Not only did you disrespect my wishes and let him roam free, but you couldn't be bothered to be here.  If I were important to you, you would have been here because you wanted to.

It's better this way.  I still look.  I still notice all the cars, without the monkey, still makes me think of you.  These last six months have not be easy or fun, but I'm still here and I'd like to think my efforts have made things, if not better at least bearable.  I crave being hugged, to know that no matter what it'll be ok.  I miss the "we'll figure it out" and I'm tired of figuring it out on my own.  I  miss my cheering section telling me how smart and beautiful I was.

take care,
